Everyone wants to be happy!

What is the first thing comes to mind when you think about happiness? How do you define happiness? In other words, what makes you happy? Money, family, friends, sex, a good beer or glass of wine, surfing, backpacking, skiing, clubbing, dancing, traveling, or simply all the "stuff" you buy?

In Dr. Robert Spitzer's book, "Healing the Culture,” he outlines four levels of happiness and three corresponding levels of unhappiness – each equated with the abuse of the first three levels of happiness. God has designed us to be happy,

First, we enjoy the sensuous gifts that produce ‘animal happiness’ - good food & drink, sex and rest.

Next, God has given us a mind to control our passions (the abuse of animal happiness) and to seek to improve and increase our education & skills in order to better our lot and society in general.

Third, God has commanded that we love each other as we love ourselves. Focusing our minds and attention on other people tends to minimize our selfishness while increasing the net happiness of our circle of family and friends.

Finally, God encourages us to love like he loves, without any expectation of reciprocity, of being loved in return. Few of us spend much time at this level, as we are too self-focused, but when we make occasional forays into this arena, surprise! The rewards are certainly worth it!

Enduring happiness seems counter-intuitive because it depends on an outward focus rather than ‘event or stuff related pleasure.’ Everyone enjoys a good meal, a new car or a fun vacation, but these come to an end (we look forward to our next meal in a few hours, cars get old and vacations quickly end) and each requires another “fix” if we want to repeat each happiness event.

Happiness that travels with us everywhere we go, i.e. enduring contentment, requires deep gratitude and satisfaction with the way things are – even while we seek to enjoy short term pleasures, self improvement, and service to each other and God.

Happiness abounds as we serve God as health professionals, seeking to “heal” others. Everyone needs ultimate healing… healing from our own sins or the pain inflicted on us by others. There is, of course, nothing we can do to earn this ultimate healing from God. The gift of salvation is free to everyone. Receiving the forgiveness Jesus offers everyone is the first step to enduring happiness – resulting in peace with God. Fellowship with a community of “like-minded travelers” facilitates further growth as we learn to love God and each other, learning to live as Jesus modeled for us.

A team consists of Christian physicians and their spouses, dentists and students, and physical therapists took time from work to provide medical services to those whom have zero access to medical care in Jeremie, Haiti. The journey to the site was not a smooth ride. They encountered unwelcoming neighborhood and crowded street filled with people and markets. They also had a moment of utopia to enjoy the peaceful scene on the way to Jeremie.

A temporary medical clinic was set up when the team arrived. From triage to clinical consultation, the whole team provided standardized care to the people. Medical technology and pharmaceutical were provided. Ultrasound was performed on a boy who had a tumor on his right posterior shoulder, located near his right arm pit. The team decided to make a surgical removal of the tumor. Although the team only had limited resource and staff, it was a successful operation. New portable ultrasound technology really made a difference for the team to make diagnose and provide care. A growth on a girl's right face was taken care by imaging ultrasound, primary care, to surgical treatment. The smile on her face after receiving the treatment was priceless!

Three dentists, eight dental students, and four dental assistances worked around the clock to extract teeth and provided dental care. The joy of seeing aching teeth removed must be beyond comprehension. Who would like to live with an aching tooth?

The physical therapy students brought Jesus' helping hands to the team. Their presence and enthusiasm gave the team heartfelt warmth to continue their work. Many God's moments penetrated through the services brought by the PT team. A girl was able to walk again with a walker and a man gained his mobility with a wheel chair. We are humbled and reminded again that medicine is not just about medical care, technology, and pharmaceuticals. A lesson learned that healing also requires Jesus and His servant heart.

The team didn't forget the importance to share the Gospel with the people. They brought Evangicubes to tell the story of Jesus - He came to this world to give us Hope for life and the eternity by paying our debt of sins on the cross. By God's grace, the local evangelical church and crusade also came to preach the good news. People were set free from their illness and heard about an everlasting cure for their broken lives.

Our mighty God knows when and how to place us in His time to accomplish His will. Medicine is merely a mean for restoring health. As Christian medical professionals, we hope people to see God is the only source for healing through medicine. No matter how hard we try to prevent or cure illness, death still exists. The only cure for death is Jesus. Jesus eventually is all we need for living a life everlasting.

Many valuable Scriptures were shared during the presentation:
Thank you class 2015, as you embark on a journey to make rounds in the hospitals, we hope you will experience God intimately in your daily life. We are excited for you and pray you will make the best out of your education and academic career. May you shine for Jesus and be the light and salt to the people around you. How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?' So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:14 - 17

Who is the President of CHF 2010-2011?

Many people have identified Benjamin Deters as our current president. Aside from the fact that he stands head and shoulders above the rest of us, Ben is the only Caucasian leader in leadership. He is also the president of the Basketball Club and thus already has presidential experience. It only makes sense that the president of CHF be distinguished among the other leaders; however, we regret to inform all that Ben deters from being recognized as the CHF president.

The next to be assumed to fulfill the presidential position is none other than the very person who realized that Ben's first and last name is a stand-alone sentence, Yohan Shin. Yes, Yohan is the voice of conviction and morality - a voice that is quite melodious (shameless plug for Yogie Bear: http://www.youtube.com/yohantoob) and even makes female pharmacy professors rattle microphones in excitement. Sadly, Yohan drops the presidential title like he drops a certain fellow female leader into a lake because she was too heavy for him to lift up out of the water.

Perhaps the president is Evan Kim. It would be a logical guess that the head honcho is the one with the biggest head. Even OMM professor Dr. Crotty has commented on how Evan's head is the biggest head that he's seen and often calls upon Evan to be a demo when he (Dr. Crotty) wants a challenge. Evan's social event planning and activities during the retreat have distinguished him among the members as the director of such perilous games like acid river and electric fence. Let's not forget that he is currently the most elderly CHF leader of 2010-2011. Alas, Evan is not the president, for he's already pre-occupied with defending against young ping pong enthusiasts, Zergs, and zombies.

Why does CHF have to have a president? Why not have two presidents like Allen Chang and Naomi Chiang? While they are separate entities, one rarely sees one without the other, and how perfectly do they balance each other out. When Naomi's worried, Allen's nonchalant. When Allen doesn't want to smile, Naomi's all smiles and hearts. They are the babies of the group, but because they are the youngest, we can only assume that they are baby geniuses. After all, Allen skipped kindergarten. While other kindergartners were learning how to count cookies, Allen was already calculating the perfect ratio of chocolate chips to flour for Naomi's homemade cookie recipe. Yes, they have known each other that long. Sorry to disappoint again, but CHF does not have co-presidents. Allen and Naomi are too busy studying and baking, respectively, to mind what the other leaders do.
Well, that only leaves this insignificant transcriber. Yes, I write the emails and update the blog; however, such duties are typically filled by the secretory and historian. The great part about the writing is that I don't really have to elaborate much about myself. Nope, I'm not the president of CHF. ^_^

CHF leadership is a team. There is no president. There are no positions. We are all equals working together to provide a safe environment of worship, fellowship, and expression of spiritual beliefs. Duties are divided amongst ourselves equally. When one of us needs help, the others step up. While we are all friends outside of CHF, we act professionally and respectful to each other during events and leadership meetings. Prior to condoning or instigating a certain action or principle, the leadership ensures that each one is of one mind and that that which we are condoning is founded upon the Scripture. Yes, like the infamous trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, we are the Fellowship. We all have the name of Christ tattooed on our hearts and consuming our minds.

Being on leadership has brought each one of us closer to the other, and the bond that brothers and sisters in Christ share when praying for each other, praising God side by side, and merely basking in His glory together is unbreakable and binding regardless of the physical distance or the hardships that each one shall one day face. It is a blessing to know that no matter where each one of us goes in the future, we are bound by the blood of Christ; for by it, we have become sons and daughter, and thus brothers and sisters, of a glorious Father in heaven.

Another amazing aspect about CHF leadership is that the Peras are such strong pillars that the duties of being a leader become effervescent. Their guidance and understanding extends beyond expectation and provides such a valuable resource that we continually praise God for their presence and magnanimity.

So, for all that are interested in becoming a leader, CHF has been a blessing, even during the most hectic times of school. Please come out at noon on Friday, January 14, 2011, to the Peras' house if you are interested and desire to be a part of a group of people who have come from different paths of life but have converged upon this point, at this present time, by the grace and omniscient guidance of God.

Until our next blog, take care, and God bless.

At first, Evan planned a bowling event but decided to change it to the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. The Mystery Spot is a gravitational anomaly - the only one of its kind in the entire world!

Our adventure begins with meeting in front of Lander Hall on a cold yet beautiful Saturday morning. Yohan and Bersabell volunteered to drive, so it didn't take long for us to divide into a guy car (Yohan, Allen, and Evan) and a girl car (Bersabell, Lois, Angela, and Naomi). I may be a little partial, but the girl car totally rocked. Bersabell carries her own pharmacy and grocery store in her purse and vehicle. Let's not even mention the fact that she drives a Prius, so we were pretty much saving the environment all the way to Santa Cruz. They'll never admit it, but we all know that the guys were jealous. ^_^

Upon our arrival at the Mystery Spot, Lois was surprised that it was located in a forest. I think it was just a little too much nature for Lois. Good thing we didn't have to hike any unpaved paths.
Thanks to Evan Yung Kim for planning our first volunteering service of the semester at the Soup Kitchen at the Christian Help Center on Sacramento St. in Vallejo. At the Christian Help Center, we are blessed with the opportunity to serve food to those in need. Dinner is served around 5:30 p.m., so we try to get there around 4:30 p.m. to help set up tables, organize chairs, arrange dishes, and basically just help out with whatever needs to be done.

During dinner time, it is our job to serve the food. We set up an assembly line, and we all had our stations. We were ready for the masses. After prayer was spoken to bless the food, we went straight to work filling plates with deliciousness. The trick is to give people a decent amount of food while retaining enough for everyone who comes in. Praise God that this was well accomplished because people were able to come back for seconds! Sorry, but there aren't any pictures of our serving the food because we were all too busy to take pictures. After everyone finished eating, it was time to clean up.

Retreat was amazing. While it wasn't a retreat solely for spiritual growth, it was a great retreat for fellowship and introduction to CHF, Christianity, and balancing our career with Christianity. Of course, there was also a lot of relaxing, eating, and team building.

Our wonderful weekend began with the magical crossing of a ferry. To not take the ferry would be an hour detour to Snug Harbor. Allen, Naomi, Yohan, and I have decided to call the ferryman Charon (regardless of the gender of the actual ferry person) and the vastly wide and deep river (please detect the sarcasm) the River of Styx. As we leave this life of school, stress, and constant sorrow, we sail toward the relaxing and peaceful place of Snug Harbor. It truly is a retreat from this present world. :)
On Friday night, Dr. Pera spoke to us (stay tuned for notes on Dr. Pera's "lecture").

Ken Jones gave us an amazing sermon on Saturday (stay tuned for key points on Ken Jones' sermon).

In between the sermons, we ate and just enjoyed each others' company.

With the our first blocks coming, everyone is stressing. Second years have started skipping classes in order to prepare. First years are still quite diligent and attending classes in hopes of grasping knowledge and weaning whatever information necessary before their exams. Everyone is wanting a break and hoping that they are prepared. Sigh...with such impending doom looming overhead, one wonders what to do after such a stressful experience. Ok...so maybe more people are worried about the exams instead of playing after; however, I've always been one to think more about playing. ^_^

Well, good thing CHF can provide an option for a relaxing and uplifting weekend after the blocks - CHF Retreat!

This is a new feature that the CHF leadership has decided to start. Well, actually, this was an idea placed into my head (yes, inception) by Ben as a way to keep a log of CHF activities. Before I begin, let me introduce our 2010-2011 CHF leaders:

Maritess Gay Asumen, COM 2013
Allen Chang , COM 2013
Naomi Chiang, COM 2013
Benjamin Deters, COM 2013
Evan Yung Kim, COM 2013
Yohan Shin, COM 2013
Angela Yeh, COM 2013

Also, we cannot forget our wonderful faculty adviser, Dr. Abe Pera, and his wonderful wife Sharon. For 3 years, the Peras have opened up their homes as the main fellowship location for CHF members and have been great pillars in our ministry and faith.

We have a lot planned for this year, and we look forward to meeting everyone and growing closer to each person as we trudge through the hardships of school and rejoice in each blessing that God has given us. Keep updated with our CHF calendar so that y'all will know about our events.
